Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software companies sell a simple premise: if you can manage customer data, you can grow your business. But capitalizing on that promise is complicated, as any company struggling with CRM implementation knows. Kristen Thom, senior vice president of customer experience for White Cup, has an easy fix for this persistent CRM pain point. She helps distributors reframe their focus, emphasizing actionable information over team micromanagement. Jason caught up with her to discuss White Cup’s powerful CRM+BI solution and the revolutionary ways that the company incorporates AI to capture hidden market share while improving long-term customer relationships.
“It’s different than other B2B and it’s certainly different than B2C markets. When you understand distribution itself, you start understanding what those nuances are,” says Kristen, who has tracked those variables for over a decade in her various roles with White Cup. “There’s this interesting intersection of customer understanding and customer engagement, plus this larger ecosystem that’s much more complex than a lot of other B2B industries.”
Distributors and, more specifically, inside and outside sales teams, interact with hundreds of customers plus thousands of SKUs daily. Collating that data into something usable is not only important on a task-oriented level, but also imperative to the future success of any distributor.
White Cup offers an out-of-the-box data management solution with a clear understanding of team buy-in and distributor needs. “Distribution is particularly interesting,” observes Kristen. “They’re always looking for how can we do more with less, running on thin margins.” There’s a lot of pressure to get up and running quickly and lock in on an ROI sooner. But Kristen urges the C-suite to take a more holistic approach to implementation. “Rather than trying to take all of your current processes and jam them into a tool all at once, we want to take a step back and ask what’s most important first, and tackle that before we bite off the rest.”
White Cup harnesses the potential of BI and Agentic AI to accelerate revenue growth while never losing sight of foundational relationships. “We try to empower our users to be that trusted advisor to their customers,” says Kristen.
QUOTES
“With CRM in particular, one of the biggest sinkers that I’ll see in an implementation or just adoption of something that you’ve had for a while. Either one is trying to do everything all at once.”
“Your CRM should be giving you this information and insights––again from Business Intelligence from AI––suggestions from all of these different things and enabling you to be really effective.”
“Your CRM should be giving you way more than it is receiving from you.”
“It’s an ecosystem of understanding the customer.”
“We wanna continue to add in AI features into our system that are directly related to solving distributors’ problems. So, we don’t like to slap AI into our product for the sake of saying we have AI.”
“Your BI and your CRM should be feeding you information to make you more successful at your job. It should be enabling you to do more with less time, less effort, all of these things, and Agentic AI is a wonderful tool for us to provide that type of service for folks.”
“It’s all about interacting with that mini assistant in your pocket, essentially, and being more efficient, having more of that data at your fingertips, but in a way that’s actually usable.”
“We’re always super focused on what does this actually mean for our users, and frankly, what are our distribution folks looking to adopt in their business? What are they ready for? What are they comfortable with?”
